Teach Them

When my family and I moved to Tuscaloosa in 2019, we often visited the Children's Museum there. It had several interesting exhibits, but one particular day, my daughter—who was five at the time—insisted we see a specific exhibit. It was a small classroom that looked like it had been plucked straight out of the 1930s. Of course, she was the teacher, and I had to sit on a bench for toddlers, acting like an eager pupil.

While I listened to her tell me about the “ABQs” and bears, I noticed some old schoolbooks on display and managed to grab one without getting scolded by the teacher. It was the Revised Edition of McGuffey's Third Eclectic Reader, published in the 1920s. As I thumbed through it, I saw that the book was filled with various stories and lessons, but one poem, entitled Remember, caught my attention. Due to limited space on this bulletin, I can only share a few lines from it:

Remember, Child, remember,

That God is in the sky;

That He looks down on all we do.

With an ever-wakeful eye....

Remember, child, remember,

That God is good and true;

That He wishes us to always be

Like Him in all we do...

Remember, child, remember,

That you love, with all your might,

The God who watches o'er us,

And gives us each delight;

Who guards us ever through the day,

And saves us in the night.

Such a contrast to what is taught in schools today! Now, I am not going to repeat the worn-out cliché: “Everything has gone downhill since they took prayer out of the schools!” The truth is that biblical morality was already being abandoned in homes across America long before the government clamped down on Christian ideals. God's intention is for us to teach our children about Him—not the government!

However, it is heartbreaking to see how drastically things have changed. Curriculum is saturated with liberal ideals and distorted historical facts. The required reading for most youth uplifts immorality while undermining spiritual integrity. Parents are more concerned about teaching their kids how to build a successful career than how to cultivate moral character! It's high time we stand firm on God's Word and teach His truth to this generation. They must learn that true success comes through following the will of God, not conforming to the trends of the world.
