Birdsong (Part 2)
Just a few weeks ago, I wrote about enjoying morning coffee with my wife while listening to birds chirping and whistling. In that article, I shared how several Scripture passages often come to mind when I hear what seems like the anthem of various birds. One such passage is Lamentations 3:22–23, which magnifies the mercies and faithfulness of God.
The next passage I want to share is found in Luke 12:6–7, where Jesus says, “Aren’t five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Jesus mentions sparrows because, in Jerusalem, they were abundant and often overlooked. They were among the most common offerings for religious rites due to how inexpensive they were. These small birds served not only as sacrifices for the poor but also for lepers undergoing ceremonial purification. Associated with poverty and debilitating disease, sparrows became synonymous with the word insignificant. And yet, God knows when even a single feather falls from their bodies.
If that weren’t enough to demonstrate God’s sovereign care, Jesus revealed that God knows every single hair follicle on a person’s head! We must understand that what the world often overlooks is regarded in the eyes of the Father. He knows every hidden hurt and personal pain you’ve experienced in life. Trust in Him and rejoice, knowing that the sovereign Lord of the universe cares for you. Sometimes, just hearing the small sound of a chirp reminds me that I serve a Savior who is not distant or disinterested, but desires that I, an unworthy creature, draw near to Him.
