Birdsong (Part 1)

Nothing beats a beautiful, dew-filled morning when I have time to sit outside next to my lovely wife, drink coffee, read Scripture, and listen to the singing of the birds. These moments don’t align too often, but when they do, they create a truly memorable experience.

At my home, I have seen various kinds of birds, such as cardinals, blue jays, finches, chickadees, and sparrows, etc. In the morning hours, I often hear a chorus of chirps and whistles, all chiming together. On paper, it may seem chaotic, but in reality, it forms a beautiful song.

If I listen long enough, several distinct passages inevitably come to mind. I would like to share one of them now and reveal the rest in later articles.

During a time when the prophet Jeremiah witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem and the suffering of his people at the hands of the Babylonians, he declared:

"It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23)

When I hear birds singing, I am reminded of the unfailing mercies of God. I realize that I have not received what I truly deserve, but instead, time and again, I have experienced His love and grace. Their melodic chirps seem to proclaim: "New every morning, new every morning is His wondrous love over His creation!"

Even on rainy days, though harder to perceive, I have still heard birds sing. The truth is that God's love and goodness remain the same, whether the sun is shining or not. When everything seems to be falling apart, try listening to a birdsong, and like Jeremiah, reflect on the faithfulness of God.
