Burning Brightly
Today marks the first day of our Vacation Bible School. A lot has gone into decorating, advertising, planning, and preparing for it. It can be a stressful time, but it can also be very rewarding, because of the opportunity to minister to the younger generation. As I get older, I often reflect on the Psalmist’s words, “O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.” (Psalms 71:17-18 / ESV) What a precious prayer: to burn brightly for the next generation!
I hope that if I live out another half of my life, which would mean I’d be right at 80 years old, that I would not grow callous over ministering to youth. You see, I have been told before that I am a little “rough around the edges.” Though it was said in jest, there is obviously some truth to it. It may seem strange, but sometimes I actually relish the sentiment, because I don’t want to be known as a “smooth talker” or act like some polished politician. However, I also don’t want to grow into a cantankerous miser. One who is stuck in his own bubble, caring little for the outlook of future generations.
I hope that as my outward body slowly fades from this life, I would be faithfully fighting against the wicked, worldly influences in which the devil seeks to corrupt the youth. I hope that, in the end, the life which I live would not push away my children from the gospel, but guide them to the wonder of Christ! May we blaze a shining trail of faith for the next generation to see and follow!
